psp custom firmware 5.02 Gen-A

Not for PSP 3000

It seem PSPGen has release there first Custom Firmware for 2009 , What a good way for a PSP Custom Firmware Delveloper to start out the new year and thanks it users for all their support by releasing the PSP Custom Firmware 5.02 Gen-A . Well guys, Here is a new custom firmware from pspgen.com and hope ya guys are able to have a great time with them as you did with their latest custom firmware 3.95 PSPGen they release a few months ago .

Requirements:
- A PSP with 3.52 M33-3 or higher.

Instructions:
- Extract the UPDATE folder to /PSP/GAME on your memory stick.
- Obtain the 5.02 EBOOT and copy it to the UPDATE folder with the name ‘502.PBP’.
[This step is not required if you are already on a different 5.02 custom firmware]
- Run the updater and follow the instructions on the screen.
- The battery check can be bypassed by holding L + Triangle on launch.
- Enjoy 5.02 GEN-A.

Features:
- Suspend, Reset and Pandora options added in the recovery.
- Hide MAC Address can be enabled via configuration in recovery.
- VSH Recovery can now be opened with an option in the vshmenu.
- You can quickly exit the recovery by pressing the Select button.
- Game Categories Plugin by Bubbletune integrated (enabled by default, can be disabled in recovery).
- Option to reboot in to official firmware in the recovery, it will remain like this until the next cold reset.
(Slim Only, support for the Phat PSP might be added later)
- Slim Colors Patch by Bubbletune integrated, enable in the recovery and flash 13-27.bmp to your flash0.
This will allow you to use the Slim Colors on your Phat PSP.
- Higher homebrew
compatibility compared to other 5.02 custom firmwares.
- Functional 5.02 pops (keep pops compatibility in mind).

Using Game Categories (taken from the original readme):
- Create folders prefixed with ‘CAT_’ in the GAME, GAME150, GAME5XX or ISO folder.
- Fill them with everything you want to appear for that specific category (if you have the same category name in two or more folders they will be mixed).
- Keep the Sony file length limitations in mind, due to the name of the category being added to the total length, the length of each filename will increase even more.
If a corrupt icon shows up, try lowering the length of the filename.
- Boot your PSP, open vshmenu and select the appropriate category.

Notes:
- I’ll release a 1.50 kernel add-on in a few days.
- The very latest 5.00 popsloader from Dark_AleX can be used in this custom firmware.
- You can’t share the files located in your flash0 between multiple machines, instead, share the updater.
- Installation of this custom firmware remains at your own risk, even though it has been tested througly, we can not provide any guarantee.

About homebrew-only version:
- This version of the custom firmware aims at supporting game developers and allowing things such as running homebrew, modding your XMB, etc. But removing support for POPs and ISO’s.
- In the future we might hope to find something similiar to this in an official firmare, a dream, perhaps. :)
- You can select whether you want to install the Full or Lite version in the updater, and your selection can be changed later.
- This version saves about 70kb of flash0 space!

CTF_Updater notes:

- This program lets you convert 5.00 M33 Themes to 5.02 GEN Themes.
- Usage: in a ms-dos prompt, the same file input is converted in output
- Use with CXMB in this package

Recovery translation:
- Included in this package are English, French and Spanish. English one is only included for translation purposes, as the recovery has the English one embedded inside and will switch to it when your own language is not found.
- You can place your language files in either ms0:/seplugins or flash1:/, after which they will be used if the appropriate language was selected in the XMB.

Credits:
- Dark_AleX: For the original custom firmware.
- PSPGen: For all their support and allowing us to release the CFW on their site.
- Bubbletune: For giving me and allowing me to use his Game Categories Plugin and Slim Colors source code.
- Granite: For creating the ICON0.PNG used in the updater.

do u need custom firmware already installed on your psp to install 5.02 cfw

  2. admin on January 2nd, 2009 1:40 pm

yes you need to have PSP Custom Firmware install on your PSP , If you do not have a cfw install, You might want to try the Pandora Battery to help you with the downgrade and upgrade for your PSP .

  3. admin on January 2nd, 2009 4:26 pm

yes, you will need a psp custom firmware install in order for you to install a custom firmware. Otherwise you will need to downgrade then install a custom firmware .

  4. Bowser N64 on January 2nd, 2009 11:02 pm

And HOW do I downgrade? I can use the official 1.50 firmware yes? I mean, SURELY there is a way to downgrade without a Pandora battery. Seriously. I’m getting bored with my PSP not running homebrew. I mainly use it for video and music and pictures.

  5. admin on January 3rd, 2009 12:17 am

If you are runninf psp custom firmware 3.51 or over, Then the only way is with the pandora battery, As for 1.5 , Yes if you are able to download to 1.5 , then you will be able to run any homebrew .

  6. david on January 3rd, 2009 1:54 am

    does it support ISO/CSO

  7. PSP rock on January 4th, 2009 9:31 am

Will the ISO support be there in this update?

  8. admin on January 4th, 2009 12:53 pm

yes it does support iso and cso .The release by PSPGen does support iso and cso images

  9. admin on January 4th, 2009 12:55 pm

yes, ISO and CSO support .

  10. g0nzo on January 4th, 2009 3:18 pm

do i need oficial 5.02 firmaware when intalling gencfw in same folder?

  11. admin on January 4th, 2009 4:28 pm

no you do not need to have a official psp firmware version 5.02 in order to install custom firmware 5.02 gen

As long your PSP has cfw install, Then all you need to do is update your custom firmware to 5.02 Gen-A

Remember when updating PSP Custom Firmware. You will need the Custom Firmware and the official firmware to install and or upgrade your current firmware.

Read the Instruction included in the custom firmware package download and you will find all the information you need on how to go about upgrading and or install psp custom firmware 5.02 Gen-A

  12. Bowser N64 on January 6th, 2009 1:36 am

Ah thanks. I have the official 5.02 hacked firmware that runs Isos and all. Looks like I’ll need a Pandora battery eh>? they sell these in store as real accessories? Or Do I HAVE to get it online?

  13. PSP Custom Firmware on January 6th, 2009 2:58 am

Well you could make your own pandora battery, but you will need access to another psp custom firmware PSP to do the process. IF you are not able to do the process, Then you could check out my psp store where you will be able to find PSP Pandora battery if you decide to buy one which is located here http://pspcustomfirmware.com/store/

  14. PSP 5.00m33-4 user on January 10th, 2009 7:24 am

Ok, I’m download now, but will this effect
my flash0 theme, my CTF themes, my ISOs and CSOs, And/Or my programs? Just Wondering…

  15. Chris Kubler on January 11th, 2009 5:56 am

Kudos to you guys for promoting and supporting this custom firmware update. Is Sony just the worst culprit out there when it comes to fighting homebrew developers?

  16. c4 on January 11th, 2009 10:00 pm

  22. admin on January 13th, 2009 12:23 pm

that is the first I heard of that . I will look into it and let you know . For now I recommend going down to 4.01 m33 or 3.95m33. One should not upgrade to 5.02 unless you have to .

  23. admin on January 13th, 2009 12:24 pm

What seem to be the problem you are having ?

  24. jordan on January 14th, 2009 7:43 am

i have the eboot in my game folder but when i go to play it says copyright protection information invalid i have a firmware of 3.95 and i have the god of war psp slim edition

  25. Wayne on January 15th, 2009 5:59 am

    Hey,

I have just upgraded my psp (Phat) with the latest CFW. I was running fine before now I can’t play any of my ISO games.

I am reading about an optional ON/OFF for iso and cso to work. The thing is I can play a cso file but not a iso file.

Both are in the ISO folder.

I am sure it something on my end, what do I have to enable in the recovery menu to make ISO games work?

I will hang on with 5.02 (with the 1.50 add on) it seems cool, but I might have to roll back to what worked for me because I have way too many games collected to rip them all into cso files.

    Thanks,

  26. Nelson on January 15th, 2009 9:55 am

I updated to a 3.52 M33-3 and I have a PSP 1000 (PHAT). When I follow the instructions to install 5.02 GEN-A I got an error message saying something similar to the battery needing to be at least 75% the first time I tried. I continued to retry installing 5.02 GEN-A and I keep getting the error that it didn’t recognize 3.52 M33-3 or higher on the PSP, yet I have successfully upgraded to 3.52 M33-3.

I’m an old PSP hacker new on the scene. Used to play around a lot with 1.5 on the PHAT the year it came out. I currently have the 4gb Memstick and 3.6 2200mAh battery.

  27. admin on January 15th, 2009 11:13 am

try to see if you have the option for enable UMD in your recovery menu, IF is on,. try to turn it off . If it is OFF , Try to turn it on and add a UMD game and then try to see if you are able to play the ISO..

I have not used the 1.5 add on, So I really cannoit say if that is the cost of the problem.

also check the speed and make sure is set to default .

  28. admin on January 15th, 2009 11:15 am

Really can’t say why you are having such a hard time . You follow instruction as follow. Must be a upgrade or battery not fully charge. Try to updated while battery is charging and hopefully be able to work out.

  29. Nelson on January 16th, 2009 12:03 pm

Hey guys, thanks for the help.
I discovered what was the problem. I was checking through recovery menu and I noticed that the kernal was still set on 1.5. I didn’t know that the whole time and that I had to change it. So I changed it to 3.xx and I was able to install the 5.02 GEN-A CFW.

  30. admin on January 16th, 2009 12:20 pm

Hey Nelson, Glad to hear you got it fix. I will make a post with your solution just in case someone else might have the same problem.

Thanks again for sharing your solution .

  31. Dan on January 16th, 2009 1:57 pm

I had 3.95cfw and need 4.01 to play a game in my iso folder. I stumbled upon this upgrade so i figured why not get this one now and not have to upgrade for a little while. As soon as the update was done everything worked fine. I can run NesterJ (nes emulator) and any PSX game I have formatted for the psp or that i have downloaded. But now it won’t read any of my ISO files…they don’t appear at all as if they didn’t exist. I’ve changed every setting I could possibly think being related to this problem and nothing works… So now my psp only works 50%… Am I suppose to wait for a patch from you guys or just downgrade and never upgrade from Gen-A??? >_>

  32. Dan on January 16th, 2009 2:22 pm

Correction, I CAN’T play my old psx files, they appear on my games folder but i get the “copyright protection information is invalid” message… so now my psp is kinda useless other than playing umd’s and music.

  33. admin on January 16th, 2009 5:43 pm

Well PSP Custom Firmware should never be updated unless needed to. But as for your problem you are having, Have you try to set your recovery Menu setting to default to see if there is a setting there with the problems. Kind of weird it does not show ISO as I updated my psp last week with this custom firmware and so far seem to be working fine.

  34. admin on January 16th, 2009 5:44 pm

Maybe has to do with yoru setting. Try to reset your setting and see if that works, If not, Then is best just stay on PSP Custom Firmware 5.00 M33 for now.

  35. Jake on January 17th, 2009 3:34 pm

Does this allow emulators to be used on the PSP?

  36. admin on January 17th, 2009 9:16 pm

i had a member post that he was able to get it running. SO I guess yes you can run emulators on PSP Custom Firmware 5.02 Gen-A

  37. dyosef on January 18th, 2009 5:30 am

Hey guys i have a question.
Just upgraded my firmware to 5.02, suddenly I cant open my recovery menu. Need help badly.

  38. admin on January 19th, 2009 9:34 am

IS it a custom Firmware you install or the official firmware ?

  39. NeedCFW on January 19th, 2009 10:24 am

    2 things,
How do I get to this if I have official firmware 5.02 currently?
    AND
instead of a pandora battery, will a Hot Wire battery do? It still puts it in service mode, and you can see them at the link below:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Datel-Direct-Ltd-Hot-Wire/dp/B0013IVHO6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1232222572&sr=8-4

    Thanks!

  40. admin on January 19th, 2009 11:23 am

If you could get youir battery into service mode. Then all you will need is the magicstick and you be ready to downgrade your PSP.

Their are 2 parts to downgrading. a PSP Pandora Batter or anyone you make and a MAgicStick

  41. NeedCFW on January 20th, 2009 1:20 am

But when my PSP is in service mode, how do I get from 5.02 official to custom?

    Cheers!

  42. Jacob on January 20th, 2009 9:13 am

I get an error on my psp saying that the data is corrupted. I currently have version 5.02 (the official one) on it. What should I do?

  43. admin on January 20th, 2009 10:26 am

You are getting that error if you are trying to run something that requires custom firmware. Being you have a Official PSP Fiurmware 5.02 . You wont be able to install a Custom Firmware without using the Pandora Battery and MagicStick to Downgrade your PSP then Upgrade back to Custom Firmware 5.02 Gen-A

you could only install a custom firmware on a PSP that has a custom firmware on it already, Otherwise you will need to use the pandora battery and Magicstick hack to install a custom firmware on your PSP

  76. Trystan on April 17th, 2009 12:54 am

    Hey people

    I just made my 5.02 0f to 3.80 m33-5

Everyone says that they cant play downloaded games on their memory stick without a UMD disk inside.

I can play downloaded games on my ms without the UMD

    These are the steps:

    1 Switch off your psp
2 Switch back on holding r
3 Now it should be in m33 recovery menu
    4 Go to configuration
    5 Go to UMD mode
6 press x to make it (currently m33 driver -no UMD-)
    7 Go back
8 Go to exit press x

Now u can play downloaded games on your memory stick and UMD disks for the shops!!

If you had a PSP Custom Firmware install and updated with a Official PSP Firmware, Then NO , you will not be able to run any ISO, CSO or Homebrews games at all .

Now if you had a Official PSP Firmware and updated to the last version . Then there is a problem with the update it itself. Which in that case. I will reset the system within PSP to default and see if that fixes the problem .
